1984 Nissan 300ZX Alarm Information
Before you go ragging on me for giving away the 'secrets' to the Z31 alarm, realize that almost every factory alarm works in this same fashion.
First, you need to realize that this alarm has no motion sensor, no break-in detector, no shock sensor, no extra goodies. All it does is flash the main headlights (no, they don't raise), honk the horns, and disable the starter. Got that? Good. Let's continue.
How to activate (arm) the alarm:
- Close both doors
- Close trunk
- Close hood
- Lock driver door with key
OR
- Lock driver door while open
- Close door(s) while holding up handle *
- Close trunk
- Close hood
* If you don't hold up the handle, the door will unlock. The alarm will still set, but now your door(s) will be unlocked.
These steps can be done in any order. You will see a yellow SECURITY light turn on in the instrument cluster to confirm alarm has been activated. If it is blinking, one of the sensors has a closed (meaning door/trunk/hood appears to be open) circuit. Once the light goes out (approx. 30 seconds), the system is armed.
How to deactivate (disarm) the alarm:
- Unlock the driver door with the key
OR
- Open the trunk with the key
This is also the only way to stop the alarm once it starts going off.
How to test the alarm:
- Roll down the windows
- Arm the alarm as instructed above (did you wait for the SECURITY light to turn off)
- Reach in the window and unlock the door (no, this will not set the alarm off)
- Any of the following should set off the alarm...
- opening the door (inside or outside handle)
- opening the trunk by pulling the lever inside
- opening the hood by pulling the hood release under the dash
Troubleshooting - Items to look at:
- Fuse - Yes, there is a fuse. Driver side kick panel.
- Relay - Engine Bay. Just behind passenger headlight.
- Pin switches
- Doors - bottom rear of door sill
- Hood - just behind driver headlight (very common problem)
- Trunk - built into mechanism
